La Jolla Viking Payton Smith Plans To Steal 400m Record

“On the girls’ side, the 400-meter run of 50.74 seconds by Monique Henderson while attending Morse in 2000 remains the National Federation of High Schools record. A four-time state champion, Henderson captured two Olympic gold medals.
La Jolla High School’s Payton Smith is impressed, but not awestruck, by Henderson’s mark heading into Saturday’s Vikings Invitational. If everything goes better than expected, she hopes to challenge it.
Smith didn’t start running track seriously until her freshman year with the Vikings. She has improved every year and is currently No. 3 on the section all-time list at 53.86 seconds — a time posted when she took third in the state meet last year.
But that isn’t even the school record. The San Diego Section’s No. 2 all-time mark belongs to the Vikings’ Janice Wiser, who raced to a time of 53.53 seconds in 1974…”
