La Jolla’s Chiara Dailey Is Going National

“It was as easy as 1-2-3.

Well, maybe not that easy, but the San Diego Section qualified three girls for Saturday’s 45th Foot Locker National Championships at Balboa Park after all three placed in the top 10 in the WestRegionals at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Defending champion Chiara Dailey of La Jolla High School placed second on Saturday, clocking a time of 18 minutes, 4.2 seconds over the hilly 3-mile course. Seven seconds back, finishing comfortably in third, was Eastlake High School’s Jaelyn Williams, while Ayanna Hickey of The Bishop’s School was seventh in 18:27.6.

Cassidy Armstrong, a junior out of Ballard High School in Seattle, clocked an impressive 17:42.0 — the same time Dailey ran a year ago — to win the race by 22 seconds. But winning the regional titleis just icing on the cake as the goal for most runners is a top-10 finish and a spot in nationals…”
