Mira Mesa Wins First Ever San Diego Badminton CIF Title

“Seventeen CIF San Diego Section championship banners hang from one wall of the Mira Mesa High School gym. Soon, there will be an addition. Making up for some past misery, the Marauders won the co-ed badminton championship on their home floor Saturday, coming from behind to defeat three-time reigning champion Patrick Henry 9-8.
The badminton section title is the first for the Marauders, who finished runner-up in 1996, 2021, and ’22. Making it sweeter, fifth-seeded Mira Mesa lost in the finals the last two times to Patrick Henry, plus lost to the No. 2-seeded Patriots twice this season.
“You look at yourself almost like you’re little brother,” said Alvin Mendoza, in his 13th year as Mira Mesa’s head coach. “At some point as the little brother all you want to do is beat your older sibling…”
