Payton Smith Passes Personal Record at Arcadia Invitational
“… Not only did she post the fastest time among state runners — Josie Donelson of Lake Oswego, Ore. was first in 53.17 — she bettered her own state meet performance of a year ago, where she was third in 53.86. The La Jolla High School star also left enough to motivate her for the rest of the season.
“I was hoping to get the school record to go with the 100 and 200, which I got earlier this year,” said Smith, who missed by .03 to matching the 53.53 run by Viking Janice Wiser way back the first year they offered girls track and field in 1974.
“If I’d pushed just a little more the final 50 yards, I would have gotten it.
“Now I’ll put that record on my ceiling in my bedroom so I’ll see it every night when I go to bed and every morning when I wake up… ”
